Minnesota Businesses launch aid campaign for drought-hit Horn of Africa

Minnesota Businesses come together in support of the fight against starvation caused by the worst drought since 1945. Due to drought, about half of Somalia’s people now rely on humanitarian aid. Minnesota restaurants and café shops owned by Somali Americans in Minnesota started new relief campaign called Dine Out for Somalia in support of the fight against starvation caused by drought affecting the Horn of Africa and other parts of the continent.

More than 50 business have signed up for the Dine Out for Somalia relief campaign. Dine Out for Somalia is a one day fundraising event to support current drought and famine relief efforts in Somalia. The day for the DINE OUT FOR SOMALIA is on April 7th, 2017.

Inspired by community members who wanted to give back, a few restaurant owners in Minneapolis got together to brainstorm on how they could play a role, spread awareness and get others involved. The goal is to raise over $150,000 to support relief efforts.

Most of the participating businesses have pledged to donate 50% of sales, with others donating as much as they can. 100% of all donations will go towards the, the American Relief Agency for the Horn of Africa (ARAHA), American Somali Relief Agency, Amoud Foundation, Arlaadi Aid, Humanitarian African Relief Organization, Read Horn of Africa USA, Somali-American Relief Organization, and Somalia Rebuild Organization.

The United Nations has estimated that financial aid of $863.5 million is needed to save lives and livelihoods in Somalia. Somalia’s President Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed Farmajo declared the ongoing drought in the country a national disaster to address the humanitarian emergency in all affected areas.

There are many ways to support these businesses and do your part to help these concerned and caring business owners and community members who come together in support of the fight against starvation caused by the worst drought since 1945.

We encourage the Minnesota community, both individuals and business owners to make a direct donation of whatever amount makes sense. Every dollar helps and please do not forget to DINE OUT FOR SOMALIA is on April 7th, 2017. Visit the Dine Out for Somalia website to see the list of businesses and their locations.
